The Go To Guidebook For Buying a Smart TV in Nepal

Getting a TV in 2022 has got quite complex because of all the jargons involved. A TV purchased for a home remains in place for quite a long unless it goes out of order. Televisions are used today not only for watching movies and shows but for gaming as well.

So, it has to be considered an investment, though it falls on the luxury side. However, before making a purchase decision, we need to be familiar with many technical details involved and know what factors has to be considered before getting one.

SMART or non-Smart

Most of the TVs these days are smart meaning they have WiFi baked in, runs on operating system and allows easy access to plethora of streaming apps.

Previously these features were exclusive to computers or laptops only, but the development in technology has made it possible for televisions to function as an internet device or what we call smart TVs.

Typically, they are bit expensive than a non-smart TV. However, we can easily transform a non-smart TV to a smart one simply by connecting a setup/streaming box.

There are plenty of such devices available in the market like Fire Stick from Amazon, Apple TV, Google Chromecast etc.

It’s good to know about these options, but it would always be a wise decision to purchase a TV that’s already Smart in the first place. It saves tons of time and endless hassle.

Operating System

As explained earlier, all Smart TV runs on Operating System just like our Smart phones. Some of the well-known Operating Systems are LG’s WebOS, Samsung’s TizenOS, Hisense’s VIDAA, Android etc.

Out of these, the most common one is the Android. Most of the Smart TV manufacturer run on Android. However, they slap on their own custom skin and features on top of the stock Android to give it a personal touch.

All of the above mentioned Operating System have their own pros and cons. Though, if compared, Android, TizenOS & VIDAA are much better in comparison to WebOS.

If you are looking for sleek and minimal interface, go for TizenOS, but if you are looking for wider array of apps and more options, opt for Android.

Screen Size

TVs are measured diagonally. So, when we say certain inches it’s crucial to understand that it’s not the same as horizontal measurement. The desired screen size always remains personal.

Some prefer to scoop on large one, while some might like just the right size. In order to make the purchase decision easier, Bloomberg has an advice when it comes to the size:

  • Measure the amount of inches between your couch and your screen placement area.
  • Divide the resulting number by 2.
  • The resulting digit is the optimal screen size required for your place.

Well, when it comes to the screen size, the choice is always personal. Since, we aren’t going to get a TV every next year, it’s always advisable to buy the larger one.

Technical Terms & Jargons

Now, let’s understand the technical terms and jargons involved when making a purchase decision for a Smart TV.

We aren’t going to dive deep and explain everything line by line, instead we shall be trying to simplify the terms and be as casual as possible. We will try to understand the most important terms only for today.

Screen Resolution

When it comes to screen resolution, always understand that; higher the resolution, better the screen quality. These days, we can find Smart TV in 4K, 6K or even 8K version.

With higher resolution, the prices might fall on the expensive side. As for now, 4K might be the smart choice. In lay man term, 4K is 4*HD (High Definition) or UHD (Ultra-High Definition).

It has to be noted that your local cable might not broadcast in 4K yet; however, most of the streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime or even Youtube does.

LCD or LED, OLED or QLED Display

Remember, all LED are LCD, but not all LCD are LED. Both types of display use Liquid Crystals to help create an image. The difference is in the backlights.

While a standard LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) uses fluorescent backlights (old technology), a LED uses light Emitting Diodes for backlights. To sum up, LEDs are thinner, has better display and are cost effective.

OLED and QLED are the advanced form of LED display. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, while QLED stands for Quantum Light Emitting Diode.

Both are highly sought after technology and has got their own kinds of pros and cons. Let’s make things simpler:

OLED

  • OLED are energy efficient as the pixels will draw lights only when they turn on.
  • OLED gets truer black, which means deeper contrast ratio and better picture quality.
  • OLED has superb colour accuracy and wider viewing angles.
  • LG flagships are mostly OLED.

QLED

  • QLED are bright and vivid.
  • QLED has excellent colour reproduction, very bright and usually cost less as compared to OLED.
  • QLED are dynamic and have stellar luminance.
  • Samsung flagships are mostly QLED.

As per a comparison test done by CNET, OLED displays are better than QLED. Read here.

Refresh Rate

The refresh rate determines how often the TV reloads or refreshes picture for realistic motion and less blur vision. Here, as well the higher the refresh rate, the better. 120 HZ refresh rate seems to be in demand at the moment.

Connectivity

While buying a TV, it’s always better to opt for the one with more ports (HDMI, USB, Audio etc.). This way, we can connect as many gadgets, sound bars, cable boxes etc. to our TV when required.
